RESUMEN

The Russia-Ukraine war and other similar conflicts across the globe have heightened risks to the United States of America's (USA's) energy security. However, little is known about the severity of the effect of energy security risks on the USA's quest to attain net-zero emissions targets by 2050. To this end, we examine the effect of energy security risks on the load capacity factor (LCF) in the USA. Employing a time series dataset spinning from 1970 to 2018, the results of the Dynamic Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) simulations model suggest that energy security-related risk hampers the long-term net-zero emissions targets with its effect decreasing over time until it varnishes in about 5 years time. The results also show that foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, renewable energy consumption, and green technology have long- and short-run positive effects on the LCF. Conversely, economic expansion and urbanization impede environmental quality by lowering the LCF both in the long run and short run. These findings are upheld by the outcomes of the multivariate quantile-on-quantile regression. Therefore, the study advocates for the consumption of renewable energy, investment in green technologies, and FDI inflows to mitigate energy security-related risks and attain the net-zero emissions targets by 2050 in the USA.

Global warming has progressed into a pressing global concern, primarily driven by human activities. To address this issue, it is vital to identify the key drivers of ecological quality and develop effective policies in response. Consequently, this study seeks to empirically examine the causal effect of financial globalization, economic growth, economic policy uncertainty, and oil consumption on the load capacity factor (LF) in Brazil. The analysis utilizes quarterly data spanning from 1990 to 2021. In this pursuit, the study introduces an array of quantile-based methodologies, encompassing quantile ADF, PP, and KPSS tests, as well as the innovative Quantile-on-Quantile Granger Causality (QQGC) approach. The QQGC represents a notable advancement beyond traditional quantile Granger causality (QGC) methods, as it accounts for the conditional distribution of dependent and independent variables. This study bridges a critical gap in the existing literature by introducing the QQGC to capture the causal influence of the regressors on LF. The findings derived from the QQGC analysis indicate that financial globalization, economic growth, economic policy uncertainty, and oil consumption significantly predict LF across all quantiles. These results offer valuable insights that can inform the formulation of effective policies and strategies aimed at addressing ecological quality and mitigating the impacts of global warming.

Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) which is a main transmembrane cell surface receptor acts as a host cell mediator resulting in increasing the SARS-Cov-2 infectivity and also plays a role in neuronal development, angiogenesis and axonal outgrowth. The goal of this study is to estimate the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the NRP1 gene on the function, structure and stabilization of protein as well as on the miRNA-mRNA binding regions using bioinformatical tools. It is also aimed to investigate the changes caused by SNPs in NRP1 on interactions with drug molecule and spike protein. The missense type of SNPs was analyzed using SIFT, PolyPhen-2, SNAP2, PROVEAN, Mutation Assessor, SNPs&GO, PhD-SNP, I-Mutant 3.0, MUpro, STRING, Project HOPE, ConSurf, and PolymiRTS. Docking analyses were conducted by AutoDock Vina program. As a result, a total of 733 missense SNPs were determined within the NRP1 gene and nine SNPs were specified as damaging to the protein. The modelling results showed that wild and mutant type amino acids had some different properties such as size, charge, and hydrophobicity. Additionally, their three-dimensional structures of protein were utilized for confirmation of these differences. After evaluating the results, nine polymorphisms rs141633354, rs142121081, rs145954532, rs200028992, rs200660300, rs369312020, rs370117610, rs370551432, rs370641686 were determined to be damaging on the structure and function of NRP1 protein and located in conserved regions. The results of molecular docking showed that the binding affinity values are nearly the same for wild-type and mutant structures support that the mutations carried out are not in the focus of the binding site, therefore the ligand does not affect the binding energy. It is expected that the results will be useful for future studies.

The determinants of environmental degradation have been investigated many times by utilizing carbon dioxide emissions and/or ecological footprint. However, these traditional environmental degradation indicators do not consider the supply side of environmental problems. Therefore, this study focuses on the dynamic influence of financial development, energy efficiency, economic growth, and technological innovation on environmental degradation in India through the load capacity factor, including both the supply and demand sides of environmental problems. For that purpose, the recently developed dynamically simulated autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method is employed using the annual time-series data extending from 1980-2020. The dynamically simulated ARDL results demonstrate that financial development, economic growth, and technological innovation have a dynamic adverse impact on the load capacity factor, whereas energy efficiency has a positive dynamic influence on environmental quality. In addition, the results support the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis as the negative effect of economic growth on environmental quality decreases over time. Based on the study findings, policy recommendations are provided for India. Finally, this study utilizing load capacity factor as an indicator for environmental quality will provide new topics in exploring the determinants of environmental degradation.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a common primary glomerulonephropathy. There is evidence that mesangial C3 deposition plays a role in the development of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of C3 deposition on the prognosis of IgAN patients. METHOD: The study included 1135 patients with biopsy-confirmed IgAN from the database of the Turkish Nephrology Association Glomerular Diseases Working Group (TSN-GOLD). Patients were excluded from the study if they were aged < 18 or > 75 years or if C3 staining had not been performed in the immunofluorescent analysis. C3 deposition was defined as an immunofluorescence intensity of C3 ≥ 2 + within the mesangium. The primary endpoints were the development of end-stage renal disease, a 30% decrease in glomerular filtration rate compared to the basal value or an elevation in proteinuria to a nephrotic level (3.5 gr/day). RESULTS: Mesangial C3 deposition was observed in 603 (53.1%) patients. No statistically significant difference was found at baseline between the groups with and without mesangial C3 deposition, as for age, sex, BMI, proteinuria level, or the presence of hypertension. In the follow-up period with a mean duration of 78 months, no significant difference was found between the two groups regarding the primary endpoints (p = 0.43). A significant correlation between C3 deposition and segmental glomerulosclerosis (S1) according to the Oxford MEST-C classification was found (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Although a correlation was observed between mesangial C3 deposition and the S1 MEST-C classification, mesangial C3 deposition was not a prognostic factor in IgAN.

Sustainable investment is widely regarded as an important market-based approach to achieving inclusive green growth. To achieve the inclusive green growth objective, companies providing sustainable products must be profitable enough to attract private capital. Oil price changes can however affect the profitability of such companies. This study assesses volatility transmission between crude oil prices and sustainable investment in the USA. Using the dynamic conditional correlation-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (DCC-GARCH) method, daily data from September 28, 2012, to October 19, 2022, is analyzed. There are several key findings from this analysis. The risk connectedness of crude oil and sustainable investment is found to vary with time. Results further show that the risk connectedness increases in periods of important economic and geopolitical events. The greatest risk connectedness of crude oil and sustainable investment is observed during the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Moreover, the result shows that crude oil is the main risk transmitter, whereas, both the energy efficiency and pollution mitigation indices (i.e., sustainable investment) are risk receivers, and crude oil is constantly dominating sustainable investment. The study findings provide valuable insights for investors and policymakers alike.

The contribution of this research is to provide empirical evidence that investing in green technology innovation (GTI) can reduce the ecological footprint in Turkey, which can lead to sustainable economic growth and environmental quality. The research also highlights the importance of controlling energy consumption, GDP, trade openness, and urbanization, as these variables have a positive or negative effect on ecological footprint. The findings of this research can be useful for the Turkish government, policymakers, and environmentalists to promote the implementation of GTI and eco-friendly resources, which can reduce the impact of climate change and contribute to economic prosperity. Overall, this research provides important information for decision-makers to adopt policies that prioritize green innovation and environmental protection in Turkey.

The sorption kinetics of two of the most frequently used antibiotics onto recycled (weathered) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was investigated, using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. Various experimental conditions were set, including pH, contact time, rotational speed, temperature, and initial concentration. The batch experimental results indicated that Freundlich model was better fitted than Langmuir (R2: 98.7 and 84.7, for CIP and CLA respectively). Maximum adsorption capacity is 45.9 mg/g and 22.0 mg/g for CIP and CLA, respectively. Enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) values were negative for CIP, indicating that the reaction was exothermic and spontaneous, respectively. It was vice versa for CLA. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) analysis confirmed the physical adsorption mechanism. The results demonstrated that the recycled PVC microplastic has a good capacity for adsorption for both antibiotics.

Given a new perspective on the environmental hypothesis, this paper systematically investigates the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), pollution haven, and pollution halo hypotheses using carbon efficiency as the dependent variable. Applying the dynamic autoregressive distributed lag simulations based on the annual time series data over the period 1990-2019, the study found that real GDP per capita has negative effects on China's environmental quality both in the short and long run, whereas the square of real GDP per capita has positive impacts. This validates the EKC hypothesis for China. Furthermore, foreign direct investment has negative effects on environmental quality in China, implying that the case of China exemplifies the pollution haven hypothesis and not the pollution halo hypothesis. The empirical results also demonstrate that energy efficiency and trade openness improve China's environmental quality both in the short run and long run. These findings, therefore, provide insights into achieving the ambitious climate goals in China by 2050.

Uncertainties surrounding climate change policies of the United States introduce some degree of risk into sustainable investment decisions in the country. This study is an attempt to provide a new perspective on the nature of this problem. Both the traditional and time-varying nonparametric quantile causality techniques are employed in investigating the effects of climate policy uncertainty on sustainable investment in the United States. Weekly time-series data from October 17, 2010, to August 28, 2022, is used for empirical analysis. Results from the traditional nonparametric quantile causality analysis reveal that climate policy uncertainty has a significant causal effect on both sustainable investment returns and volatility. The results also show that the impact on sustainable investment volatility is greater than the impact on sustainable investment returns. The time-varying nonparametric quantile causality analysis confirms that climate policy uncertainty in the United States affects both the returns and volatility of sustainable investment and that the impact is greater for volatility. It is recommended that governments and policymakers ensure that climate policy objectives are properly defined and adhered to, such that regulatory uncertainty would be limited and private sector participation in sustainable investment would be encouraged. In addition, policies clearly designed to incentivize sustainable investment by integrating risk premiums into expected profits could be employed.

The phenomenal growth experienced by Turkey at the turn of the millennium is attributed in part to increased participation in global value chains. While participation in global value chains has been beneficial to the Turkish economy, it also poses unique environmental challenges. Consequently, this study focuses on shedding some light on the environmental externality of Turkey's participation in global value chains. This article examines the environmental effects of Turkey's participation in global value chains for the period 1990-2018, using a dynamic ARDL analysis. The study further compares the environmental effects of Turkey's backward and forward linkages into global value chains, so as to determine which contributes more to carbon emissions. The cointegration test results and dynamic ARDL simulations confirm the existence of a long-run relationship between the environment and global value chain participation. All measures of global value chain participation display a positive long-run impact on carbon emissions. The results also show that the polluting effect of backward and forward linkages into global value chains is not too different. The study finding suggests that Turkey is being assigned segments of the value chain that require dirtier production processes through incentives from global trade integration, thus making Turkey a pollution haven. It is concluded that this is because other countries continually source for inputs requiring dirty production processes from Turkey, as Turkey also exports final goods that are produced using eco-unfriendly techniques. Policymakers in Turkey therefore need to follow more environmentalist policies in the process of global value chain participation.

Since China is a country with high environmental pollution, researchers have intensively studied China's environmental problems using various environmental indicators such as carbon emissions and ecological footprint. Unlike previous literature, this study analyzes the effects of economic growth, globalization, foreign direct investment, and fossil energy intensity on ecological efficiency in China. As an innovation to the literature, the study examines the Chinese ecosystem simultaneously with its economic and environmental aspects by focusing on ecological efficiency. To this end, the study applies dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (DARDL) simulations and kernel-based regularized least squares (KRLS) methods for the period from 1990 to 2018. The results of the DARDL simulations show that globalization, and economic growth enhance ecological efficiency in China. The findings also demonstrate that both foreign direct investment and fossil fuel intensity have a negative impact on environmental quality in China. Based on these results, the study suggests that the Chinese government should adopt policies to channel foreign direct investment into environmentally friendly production, reduce fossil fuel intensity, and improve ecological efficiency by making use of environmentally friendly technologies provided by globalization and economic development.

Various recently reported mutant variants, candidate and urgently approved current vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), many current situations with severe neurological damage and symptoms as well as respiratory tract disorders have begun to be reported. In particular, drug, vaccine, and neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have been developed and are currently being evaluated in clinical trials. Here, we review lessons learned from the use of novel mutant variants of the COVID-19 virus, immunization, new drug solutions, and antibody therapies for infections. Next, we focus on the B 1.1.7, B 1.351, P.1, and B.1.617 lineages or variants of concern that have been reported worldwide, the new manifestations of neurological manifestations, the current therapeutic drug targets for its treatment, vaccine candidates and their efficacy, implantation of convalescent plasma, and neutralization of mAbs. We review specific clinical questions, including many emerging neurological effects and respiratory tract injuries, as well as new potential biomarkers, new studies in addition to known therapeutics, and chronic diseases of vaccines that have received immediate approval. To answer these questions, further understanding of the burden kinetics of COVID-19 and its correlation with neurological clinical outcomes, endogenous antibody responses to vaccines, pharmacokinetics of neutralizing mAbs, and action against emerging viral mutant variants is needed.

This study investigates the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on stock market efficiency for six hard-hit developed countries, namely, the United States (US), Spain, the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, France, and Germany. Applying the wild bootstrap automatic variance ratio test on daily stock market data from July 29, 2019 to January 25, 2021, it is found that all stock markets used in this study deviate from market efficiency during some periods of the pandemic. Deviations from market efficiency are seen more in the stock markets of the US and UK during the COVID-19 outbreak than in other stock markets. These results are strengthened when a different econometric method, the automatic portmanteau test, is used. The findings of this study indicate an increasing chance for stock price predictions and abnormal returns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to present the demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, and outcomes of our multicenter cohort of adult KTx recipients with COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study using data of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 collected from 34 centers in Turkey. Demographic characteristics, clinical findings, laboratory parameters (hemogram, CRP, AST, ALT, LDH, and ferritin) at admission and follow-up, and treatment strategies were reviewed. Predictors of poor clinical outcomes were analyzed. The primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and the need for ICU admission. The secondary outcome was composite in-hospital mortality and/or ICU admission. RESULTS: One hundred nine patients (male/female: 63/46, mean age: 48.4 ± 12.4 years) were included in the study. Acute kidney injury (AKI) developed in 46 (42.2%) patients, and 4 (3.7%) of the patients required renal replacement therapy (RRT). A total of 22 (20.2%) patients were admitted in the ICU, and 19 (17.4%) patients required invasive mechanical ventilation. 14 (12.8%) of the patients died. Patients who were admitted in the ICU were significantly older (age over 60 years) (38.1% vs 14.9%, p = 0.016). 23 (21.1%) patients reached to composite outcome and these patients were significantly older (age over 60 years) (39.1% vs. 13.9%; p = 0.004), and had lower serum albumin (3.4 g/dl [2.9-3.8] vs. 3.8 g/dl [3.5-4.1], p = 0.002), higher serum ferritin (679 µg/L [184-2260] vs. 331 µg/L [128-839], p = 0.048), and lower lymphocyte counts (700/µl [460-950] vs. 860 /µl [545-1385], p = 0.018). Multivariable analysis identified presence of ischemic heart disease and initial serum creatinine levels as independent risk factors for mortality, whereas age over 60 years and initial serum creatinine levels were independently associated with ICU admission. On analysis for predicting secondary outcome, age above 60 and initial lymphocyte count were found to be independent variables in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION: Over the age of 60, ischemic heart disease, lymphopenia, poor graft function were independent risk factors for severe COVID-19 in this patient group. Whereas presence of ischemic heart disease and poor graft function were independently associated with mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Pterygium recurrence after removal surgery is an important problem. Polysaccharides obtained from Capparis species have been shown to possess various biological properties, including anti-tumor activity. This study was an investigation of the effect of Capparis ovata polysaccharides on cultured pterygium fibroblasts and a comparison with the effects of mitomycin C (MMC). METHODS: Pterygium tissue samples were obtained during excision surgery from 3 patients with primary pterygium, and fibroblasts were isolated. Pterygium fibroblast cultures and L929 cell cultures were treated with different concentrations of MMC and Capparis ovata polysaccharides. Cell proliferation and migration were evaluated. RESULTS: An MTT assay revealed that cell viability decreased with increasing concentrations of Capparis ovata polysaccharides in both cell types. MMC also inhibited the proliferation of both cell types. A scratch-wound assay indicated that both Capparis ovata polysaccharides and MMC molecules reduced proliferation and migration in the pterygium fibroblasts and L929 cells. CONCLUSION: The in vitro Capparis ovata polysaccharide inhibition of proliferation and migration of pterygium fibroblasts was similar to that of MMC. The results of this study suggested that Capparis ovata polysaccharides may be a valuable candidate drug to treat pterygium.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) used in the production of plastic materials is a temperature-soluble agent. It also has a steroid hormone-like activity; therefore, it poses a danger to human health. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of BPA on lymph node and spleen in male rats exposed to this agent during prenatal stage. The pregnant female rats were divided into four groups: control, sham, low dose (300 µg/kg BPA), and high dose (900 µg/kg BPA). BPA was dissolved in 1 mL of corn oil and administered to the pregnant rats every day during pregnancy. On the 21st and 45th day after the birth, male rats' lymph node and spleen samples were taken and histopathological examination was performed. Samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin to determine the general histological appearance, and with CD3 and CD20 immunohistochemically. The results of staining were evaluated by H-score, and statistical analysis was performed. In the samples, BPA applications were not found to cause significant tissue damage. But there was a significant decrease in the immunoreactivities of CD3 and CD20 after BPA applications in both 21st and 45th day samples. After high dose BPA administration, decreased CD3 immunoreactivity was statistically significant. It is thought that BPA does not cause histologically significant tissue damage, but it may impair organ function at cellular level. The investigation of molecules involved in organ function will be useful in revealing the mechanisms that will cause dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) were shown to have antifibrotic properties in ocular and systemic diseases. In this study, our aim was to investigate the effect of an angiotensin receptor blocker, valsartan, on pterygium fibroblasts and compare this effect with that of mitomycin C (MMC). METHODS: Pterygium tissue samples were obtained from 3 patients during surgical excision. Primary cultured pterygium fibroblasts and L929 cell cultures were treated with different concentrations of MMC and valsartan. RESULTS: The cell viability decreased with increasing concentrations of valsartan at 48 hours for both cell types. MMC inhibited the proliferation of both cell types at 48 hours. Both agents significantly decreased the cell migration of the 2 cell types, although it was more prominent in the MMC-treated group. CONCLUSIONS: Valsartan inhibited the proliferation and migration of pterygium fibroblasts. The known favorable safety profile of these drugs and the results of this study showing inhibitory effect on pterygium fibroblasts make valsartan a potential therapeutic agent for pterygium treatment.

The apoptotic protease activating factor 1 (APAF1) gene encodes a cytoplasmic protein that initiates apoptosis and is a crucial factor in the mitochondria-dependent death pathway. APAF1 is implicated in many pathways such as apoptosis, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. The purpose of this study was to predict deleterious/damaging SNPs in the APAF1 gene viain silicoanalysis. To this end, APAF1 missense SNPs were obtained from the NCBI dbSNP database. In silico analysis of the missense SNPs was carried out by using publicly available online software tools. The stabilization and three-dimensional modeling of mutant proteins were also determined by using the I-Mutant 2.0 and Project HOPE webservers, respectively. In total, 772 missense SNPs were found in the APAF1 gene from the NCBI dbSNP database, 18 SNPs of which were demonstrated to be deleterious or damaging. Of those, 13 SNPs had a decreasing effect on protein stability, while the other 5 SNPs had an increasing effect. Based on the modeling results, some dissimilarities of mutant type amino acids from wild-type amino acids such as size, charge, and hydrophobicity were revealed. The SNPs predicted to be deleterious in this study might be used in the selection of target SNPs for genotyping in disease association studies. Therefore, we could suggest that the present study could pave the way for future experimental studies.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fabry disease is a treatable cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) characterized by a genetic deficiency of α-galactosidase A. European Renal Best Practice (ERBP) recommends screening for Fabry disease in CKD patients. However, this is based on expert opinion and there are no reports of the prevalence of Fabry disease in stage 1-5 CKD. Hence, we investigated the prevalence of Fabry disease in CKD patients not receiving renal replacement therapy. METHODS: This prospective study assessed α-galactosidase activity in dried blood spots in 313 stage 1-5 CKD patients, 167 males, between ages of 18-70 years whose etiology of CKD was unknown and were not receiving renal replacement therapy. The diagnosis was confirmed by GLA gene mutation analysis. RESULTS: Three (all males) of 313 CKD patients (0.95%) were diagnosed of Fabry disease, for a prevalence in males of 1.80%. Family screening identified 8 aditional Fabry patients with CKD. Of a total of 11 Fabry patients, 7 were male and started enzyme replacement therapy and 4 were female. The most frequent manifestations in male patients were fatigue (100%), tinnitus, vertigo, acroparesthesia, hypohidrosis, cornea verticillata and angiokeratoma (all 85%), heat intolerance (71%), and abdominal pain (57%). The most frequent manifestations in female patients were fatigue and cornea verticillata (50%), and tinnitus, vertigo and angiokeratoma (25%). Three patients had severe episodic abdominal pain attacks and proteinuria, and were misdiagnosed as familial Mediterranean fever. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of Fabry disease in selected CKD patients is in the range found among renal replacement therapy patients, but the disease is diagnosed at an earlier, treatable stage. These data support the ERBP recommendation to screen for Fabry disease in patients with CKD of unknown origin.
